Americanism

One pillar of the American Legion is to promote Americanism throughout the community.  This is done through several programs:
  • Buckeye Boys State.  Of the 55 Boys State programs the Buckeye Boys state in one of the largest.  The mission of The American Legion Buckeye Boys State is to provide an educational and leadership program that exposes young men to the rights and privileges, the duties and responsibilities, and the love for God and Country necessary to being self-­‐governing citizens.  (More Info)
  • American Legion Baseball - provides over %50 of the players for college and professional teams.  This program teaches good citizenship through good sportsmanship..(More Info)
  • Oratorical Contest provides a chance for students to further understand our constitution.  (More Info)
  • Religious Emphasis.  To preserve our freedoms, we must continue to hold before the American people the spiritual foundations of our Country.  One such program is the annual celebration of the Four Chaplains with the lesson of selfless service to our fellow man..  (More Info)
  • Scholarships encourage student to develop themselves through education.  (More Info)
  • Special Olympics provides an opportunity for all kids to strengthen themselves through sports to strive for excellence.  (More Info.)

VA & R

Members of the American Legion, Department of Ohio, 12th District Council put in thousands of volunteer hours at both the Chalmers P. Wylie facility and at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center but also thousands of dollars for comfort items like coffee, pretzels and popcorn for visiting patients.

We also support the following:
  • VA Legislative issues both at the state and federal levels. (More Info and online resources)
  • Gifts for Yanks - providing Christmas gifts for veterans in our long term care facilities and support for for our VA Volunteers and special VA projects (More Info)
  • Environment-Conservation, (More info)
  • We are directly involved with employment issues in the state of Ohio (More Info)
  • The American Legion Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) program has awarded cash grants to minor children of current active duty or American Legion members. These grants help families in need meet the cost of shelter, food, utilities and health expenses, thereby keeping the child or children in a more stable environment. (More Info)
  • Accredited American Legion service officers are specially trained to provide expert assistance, free of charge, to veterans and their families. While the majority of a service officer’s work involves application for VA disability benefits, these compassionate professionals also provide information, referrals and resources on education, employment and business, death benefits and other important topics.   • And recently the 12th District has partnered with the Franklin County Veterans Service Commission (FCVSC), the VA, and many community organizations in identifying veteran housing issues and coordinating support for these issues.  These issues range from homeless veterans to senior veterans that want to remain in their own homes..  Stay tuned for more information

National Security

Whether testifying before congressional committees or meeting with U.S. representatives and senators, members of The American Legion Legislative Division are busy advocating for U.S. veterans, the military and their families on a regular basis.  


The Department of Ohio also participates in the following:
  • Operation Comfort Warriors - a program dedicated to meeting the needs of wounded, injured or ill military personnel by providing them with comfort items not usually supplied by the government.  (More Info)
  • National Emergency Fund - has provided more than $8 million in direct financial assistance to American Legion Family members and posts. By providing this emergency funding,  (More Info)
  • POW MIA Advocacy - We are committed to achieving a full accounting of all POW/MIAs from the Gulf War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Korean War and World War II. (More Info)

Children & Youth
Veterans, their family members and friends are very generous and 100% of their donations to American Legion charities goes to the cause.  The Child Welfare Foundation is one of those charities.  Grants from this foundation go to support such Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA), Childhod Leukemia Foundation and so many more worthwhile efforts.


The American Legion Department of Ohio also supports several scholarships. 


Post Activities
The American Legion Department of Ohio has many activities that Posts may sign up to participate in.  These include:
  • Pool Tournament
  • Euchre Tournament
  • State Bowling Tournament
  • Golf Tournament

Each post has activities for it;s members to participate in, such as dancing, dinners, picnics and holiday events.  



Buckeye American Legion College
The American Legion Department of Ohio offers the "Buckeye American Legion College to enhances knowledge and appreciation of The American Legion, and teach the core values and contributions of the organization, its Auxiliary, Sons of The American Legion and many subordinate programs. The National Legion College prepares Legionnaires for leadership positions in posts, districts, counties, and departments through education, development, and motivation. The curriculum challenges student leaders to think critically and creatively about issues confronting the Legion.
