From the federal side, the American Legion supports the Pay Our Coast Guard Act. When the government shutdown the begging of 2019, the members of the Goast Guard had to show up even though they did not receive a pay check on January 15. Since the Coast Guard falls under Homeland Security and not the Department of Defense, they don't recive pay during a government shutdown. The American Legion paid out over one million dollars in Temporary Financial Assistance grants to these Coast Guard members with children in need of assistance for the month.
Last year we got Congress to redefine "wartime service" period to include the entire period from December 6, 1941 until the present, until such time as all conflicts end. This made for the eligibility of more veterans for the American Legion.
